If you missed the opening to these shows at the Providence Art Club, fear not, you can still see them on Gallery Night April 21, 2016.
In The Maxwell Mays Gallery, The Providence Art Club hosts an Open Juried exhibition once annually. This provides an opportunity for artists who are not members of the Club to exhibit in our historic gallery spaces. This year, the theme for the exhibition was simply “Color” and we announced a call for artists nationwide to submit works that used color in interesting and expressive ways. We received over 750 individual entries and 65 artworks were eventually selected for display in the show. Artists included in the show have a wide range of experiences and work in a diverse array of media and styles. Artists are from across the United States including artists from Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Illinois, Georgia, Indiana, Mississippi, and California.
And then in the Dodge House Gallery there’s a joint exhibition of works by John DeMelim and Moris Nathanson.
earned his MFA from the University of Guanajuanto, Mexico. He also holds a BFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston as well as a BS from Tufts University. As part of his graduate program he was given the challenge of painting a large-scale mural for the portico of the Instituto Allende in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, which is now a national monument. This project was integral in shaping his artistic vision. Now, having been a working artist from fifty years, he has honed his worldview as an artist and become a master of mixed media, painting, drawing, serigraphy, sculpture, assemblage, and collage. Mr. DeMelim has also trained generations of local artists as a longtime Professor of Art at Rhode Island College, which recently named its new graphic design classroom and computer labs in his honor.
A Pawtucket native, received his BA in Theatre Arts from the University of Miami and then studied at the Dramatic Workshop at the New School of Social Research in New York. Art and design are central to Mr. Nathanson’s life, both in artistic and business endeavors. He is the founder and president of Morris Nathanson Design Inc., a renowned interior design firm focused on the hospitality industry, which has been involved in numerous large-scale projects throughout the United States and overseas. A prolific painter and printmaker, Mr. Nathanson is now very interested in assemblages, combining the best elements of his artistic and design influences. He is a life member of the Providence Art Club and is a founder of the Pawtucket Arts Collaborative and Trinity Repertory Company. He received honorary degrees from both Johnson & Wales University and Rhode Island College in 2009.
Nathanson and deMelim have been close friends for more than 60 years and are enjoying the opportunity to show their work together.
