We are very pleased to have Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza as one of our Celebrity Guide’s this Thursday! Check out this article from the Providence Journal
Jorge Elorza, Providence’s 38th Mayor, an accountant, lawyer, law professor, judge, and an advocate for equality in Rhode Island. He served as an associate justice of the Providence Housing Court from 2010 to 2013. Since 2005, Mayor Elorza has been a tenured Professor of Law at Roger Williams University and has published in leading law journals on housing policy and on law and science.
Born in the city’s West End, Jorge’s life story tracks Providence’s working-class, immigrant history. His parents, Aurora and Jorge Sr., emigrated from Guatemala and worked for decades in the city’s jewelry and textile mills. His mother raised their family while working multiple jobs, operating a daycare center, and selling goods from local flea markets.
Jorge lives in Providence’s Silver Lake neighborhood. He is an avid reader and traveler – having visited seventeen countries in five continents. Whether spending time with villagers in a remote corner of Nepal or working with community leaders to effect change in Providence, Jorge enjoys bringing people together to work towards a common goal: building community to improve our quality of life.
